The Internet of Things (IoT) is ubiquitous, and while it's powerful, it also presents some challenges. Each sensing element is defined as an electronic device, and all electronic devices have the commonality of requiring a power supply to operate.

When deployed in small locations such as homes and offices, it is relatively easy to power the sensor, whether it is a wired connection or even a button battery that is replaced at any time. However, due to the wide and wide deployment of environmental sensors, they are usually in remote, large spaces such as factories and buildings. ON Semiconductor's Smart Passive Sensors (SPS) are wireless, batteryless sensors that monitor various parameters such as temperature, pressure, humidity or distance at the edge of the network. When monitored by an RF reader (such as ON Semiconductor's TagReader), SPS “acquires” energy from the measurement signal and then quickly and highly accurately reads the sensor data.

Combining SPS technology with the latest Smart Passive Sensor Development Kit (SPSDEVK1) provides a complete sensing solution that includes a UHF SPS reader hub, UHF antenna, temperature sensor, a power supply and an Ethernet cable. It also includes the TagReader software to read the SPS and implement the full functionality of the tag to provide a comprehensive system solution.

The TagReader software automatically detects the type of tag being attached and reads the sensor's data graphically at a specified time. The graphical user interface (GUI) configures all system parameters related to the measurement process and reconfigures them as needed. As a result, even users who are using SPSDEVK1 for the first time can quickly and easily configure the system to measure, aggregate, and analyze data for a variety of fully wireless, battery-free IoT applications.
